    I learned something new today...

by dkeener posted: 12/26/2007 4:01:00 PM

Being on the older side of gamers, I have never run into this or even given it second thought.  However, Major Nelson had a great post on his blog today regarding why those Xbox Live Members that are under 18 can't download Demos or Trailers that are rated 'M' or 'RP'.  It all goes back to the ESRB guidelines, which impact not only Xbox Live, but Playstation Store and Wii Shop Channel.  Interesting stuff, and something that I was unaware of.

Hmm ... I think that you're definition of a "great [blog] post" differs from mine. I read that earlier today and it was, well, about the least amount you can possibly say on the subject. It didn't really seem to address the concerns that most people have regarding the ESRB issue.

The problem people are having is that they sign up for the XBL service when they are under 18 and then (surprise, surprise) turn 18 and cannot access M-rated content. This is not a problem for me (I was in my mid-20s when the original Xbox was released for crying out loud), but I can certainly see why people would be upset about this. Microsoft clearly had to know that people who were 15, 16 and 17 would turn 18 at some point, so it seems odd that they wouldn't be prepared for something like this.

Maybe it's just me, but I've never been very impressed with Larry Hyrb's blog posting skills. I'm not a huge "blog" fan to begin with, but I kind of get the feeling like he's just saying the bare minimum. Had Major Nelson actually addressed the concerns (as opposed to just talking around it) this probably would have been a great topic ... but as it is, it's just more lame PR.

I still don't know why Microsoft hasn't resolved the issue of those turning 18 not being able to access content. It seems rather trivial. Check the date of birth.. If the person's over 18, unlock it. I mean even the PS3 is capable of that.

The blog post was about basically age-gating (blocking) content through the three consoles Online Digital Download services. Nothing more, nothing less.

Right, I understand that it was about age-gating ... that's why I feel that it's kind of a lame blog post (his, not yours). The problem I have is that there are a lot of people who just worship this guy for no reason. I have to wonder if he was to come out and tell people that you had to put your games right side up before loading them into their system people would probably thank him and then talk about how amazing of a blog post it was.

As far as I'm concerned, Major Nelson yet again tells us obvious information while not addressing the real concerns.
