I used to love, love NVIDIA cards. Lately, AMD is kicking all kinds of major ass with their Radeon HD 4800 series of cards. Here's a nice little video to explain the current situation for everyone. Some of the terms and jokes might go over non-techy heads but it's still cute.

    LittleBigPlanet loses one customer

by jyan posted: 11/16/2008 3:27:00 PM

Media Molecule and Sony, you’ve lost a customer. The game, as we all know, is LittleBigPlanet. It’s a game that Chuck really loves in his review and one that I was going to pick up after spending some time with it over at his house. I’m not a big fan of side scrolling jumping games but LittleBigPlanet has potential and I love games with potential. It lets you let loose with your creativity and design levels for all to play with its ease of sharing capabilities. Well, so I thought.

As reported earlier, some levels were being moderated or removed without having the ability to get it back. While I can understand some things being removed such as for offensive content and infringing on other people’s intellectual properties, there are many instances where the user’s levels were removed without any indication why. Sony has issued a statement saying they are looking to improve communication and also give a reason as to why they are moderating the level. So far their efforts have been just as before with another group of levels being moderated without cause. I’ve seen some of the videos of some of the levels being removed and I really can’t see any reason as to why they would be in line to be moderated.

Worse yet, there hasn’t been any communication as to why the level’s being moderated. There’s a system you guys developed Sony whereby you can leave messages in the person’s inbox on your PlayStation 3. You know that little envelope where messages appear from friends and so forth? You might consider using that online feature to let the person know that 1) the level in question is being reviewed for a specific reason and 2) your level was moderated because it contains the following items.

As good as LittleBigPlanet is, I can’t find myself spending my hard earned money on a game where there’s creativity being stifled and no communication between the creators and users on issues that the company might have with the content generated. I’m not going to spend many hours trying to create a fun level for others to enjoy only to have a chance for it to be moderated without any warning. It would be a very frustrating experience and I feel for the folks that this has happened to. Sony, you guys have perhaps started a new trend with user generated content on your system to increase the value and replay ability of a console game. It’s too bad your handling these issues in such a poor manner and with that you’re losing at least one sale from me and I wouldn’t be surprised if many more were lost from those reading about your actions.

Publishers complaining about used gaming sales eating into their revenue

by jyan posted: 9/26/2008 11:36:00 AM

There seems to be more and more developers and publishers giving their 2 cents on the used gaming market and how it affects their bottom line. From that stand point, yes I see that someone buying a used copy of Grand Theft Auto IV instead of a new copy would deny TakeTwo some chunk of change. What I don't get is why are these folks complaining when other companies in other markets rarely make a peep?

Let's take a few examples. I buy a shirt from Target at $20. I wear it for a while but I lose interest in the design and how it fit. I can't take it back of course but there are some stores that buy clothes for resale. I take it to one of those stores and probably get a few bucks if I am lucky and they in turn sell it for probably double what they paid me. Does the maker of the clothing complain these used clothing stores are eating into their profits?

A local home construction company builds a house and sells it for $175,000. The owners decide they don't want the house after a few years, puts it on the market, and manages to sell it. The original home construction company doesn't come back and lament over the loss of revenue with someone buying their past used house from the owner rather than a brand new one they built down the street.

I pick up a movie and a CD from Best Buy for $30 and decide after a few viewings and listenings I didn't want them anymore. No problem as I can go to my local trade in place and drop off the movie and CD in return for different ones or cash back. I haven't seen a big rash of complaints from the movie studios, music companies, or Best Buy saying they are losing money because I traded in something I purchased for something else in the same industry.

I can go on and on about other examples that include vehicles, applicances, and toys but the bottom line is the buying and selling of used goods is nothing new and software companies shouldn't think they are special enough to be above this practice. If games weren't priced so outrageously expensive these days maybe you'd have more folks buying a copy of your game instead of buying it off the local used games place.  Maybe if you offered some online incentives like an extra 20 songs that Rock Band 2 is giving out,  people would purchase your product as new more.

Well John, you may say,  you just develop applications that aren't being sold to the general public and you'd be upset if you saw someone buying a used copy of your application over purchasing it straight from you. Personally, I would try to actually price the application at a reasonable price that I think would be accessible to more people. I'd also include incentives, support, and free additions so that people wouold be more inclined to keep the application and also feel they purchased something of sustained value. Even if someone picked up a used copy of my product, I'd count that as a potential future customer who might really like the product they picked up used and pick up my next one when it comes out rather than waiting for a used copy.

Games, like most other purchased goods through a B&M or online store, shouldn't be treated with any special provisions preventing people from reselling them for other games. If you want more people buying from you instead of used places, create high quality products, don't overprice them, and think of ways for the consumer to feel like they need to keep the game. Expect a portion of your revenue to be lost to the used gaming market, deal with it, move on, and concentrate on creating quality games.

    Family Guy does Super Mario

by jyan posted: 9/10/2008 10:31:00 AM

I really enjoy Seth MacFarlane and both Family Guy and American Dad. American Dad's really done a lot better since the first season. Well, Seth's trying his hand at some shorts and his first one is about our favorite plumber and high maintenance princess.

    Thanks Kotaku.

    LittleBigPlanet will probably suck?

by jyan posted: 8/5/2008 6:59:00 PM

Gamedaily has an opinion piece on games coming out soon that will probably suck. While there are a few choices in there that seem pretty obvious, the one that they list that will get Chuck's panties in a twist is LittleBigPlanet. Granted the game looks great but I've yet to play it. I personally think it's going to be pretty good but then again I've been burned before on games I thought would be fun and turned out to be stinkers. What do you think? And what games did you thought were going to be great only to turn out to be sucky?

OT: Nathan Loves him some Dark Knight

by jyan posted: 7/18/2008 7:47:00 AM

Fomr our writer on staff, Nathan Murray:

Just got back from the Pickerington Marcus theater which was packed for the midnight showing of Batman The Dark Knight. Over 5 different screenings were sold out, that's a good number of people watching the same thing at the same time. Any way enough about the people what about the movie?
It is everything a Batman movie can be.
That's all I have to say really.
    oh one more thing.
Go watch this movie as soon as possible.

    There's a spy in Gotham

by jyan posted: 7/4/2008 7:55:00 AM

I don't play Spy that much but it's an interesting diversion every once in a while for me in Team Fortress 2. Also, been reading up on a lot of The Dark Knight getting ready for the movie so I'm getting really excited about that as well. Today I run into the pic below and it brought a smile to my face.

How's about this for a house theme?

by jyan posted: 6/24/2008 8:39:00 AM

I'd probably do a different old school game in each room rather than keeping it to Mario but hey, this is still cool. Doubt my wife would go for it. If you want your own you can purchase the decals here.

Gaming Nexus's re-architecture and redesign with .NET 3.5 and LINQ

by jyan posted: 6/9/2008 1:36:00 PM

Well, it's been a few months now but I think things are running pretty smoothly for the new version of Gaming Nexus. A complete graphical redesign was done thanks to Kolby getting us a designer to hash out some comps. With that, I decided to move away from the open source persistence framework, Gentle.NET, into using LINQ for the database interactions. I'm still using Gentle.NET in the admin side of things until I create a brand new admin but eveything on the Gaming Nexus public side is being handled by LINQ. I must say it was pretty easy to get everything up and running in terms of retrieving the data that I needed. I did separate the data layer out so that if I want to change from LINQ to something else, I would replace the data layer and do some minor massaging of the front end to get it all working. So far I'm very happy with the performance and how well it's holding up.

The site uses master pages and CSS to do all the formatting. If you browse the site with a mobile phone, I programmatically throw up a different master page that contains different formatting along with a different CSS file to format the text to a more mobile friendly view. I can even create different themes and let users select the one they want to see. I think it came out quite well and makes it so I can change the entire look of the site without having to do as much work.

Overall, I really enjoyed redoing the site using Visual Studio 2008 and LINQ. I'm going to add some more features as the year progresses but I'm very pleased with what Visual Studio 200, .NET 3.5, and LINQ has to offer.
